Finnish DNA diagnostics company, Genoscoper to partner with Mars Veterinary

Finland-based Genoscoper Laboratories and Mars Veterinary, a division of Mars Petcare team up to combine proprietary genome technologies and DNA-based product solutions to advance the well-being and relationship between pets, pet owners and veterinarians through valuable insights into pets as individuals.

Genoscoper Laboratories, a Finland-based DNA diagnostics laboratory specializes in highly-developed DNA testing, and is the first laboratory in the world to introduce a canine genome-wide, panel-testing method that combines disease gene testing with advanced genetic diversity measurement. Mars Veterinary will integrate aspects of the Genoscoper MyDogDNA testing platform into their existing DNA veterinary products that are sold through affiliate Mars Petcare businesses, Royal Canin and Banfield Pet Hospital.

Genoscoper’s DNA test concept covers almost all known inherited canine disorders, conformational traits, and genetic diversity in one test. Results are reported via MyDogDNA.com, a global online database developed in co-operation with MediSapiens Ltd.,a leading bioinformatics company in Finland. Through the partnership with Mars Veterinary, the MyDogDNA testing concept can now be introduced to a truly global audience of dog owners, breeders, and animal health professionals.

"MyDogDNA testing concept is very versatile and can be used for various purposes by veterinary practitioners and animal owners alike. In the short term, the partnership with Mars Veterinary enables us to reach over 90 % of veterinary clinics on a global scale", says Tuomas Poskiparta, Director of Genoscoper Laboratories. "Genoscoper and Mars Veterinary share mutual interests and future visions for advancing animal health and welfare. Our partnership is a clear demonstration not only of Genoscoper’s expertise and dedication but also of the high quality of Finnish DNA technology in general. For Genoscoper, this is an important step on our path of becoming the leading DNA diagnostics company for all companion animals."

Finland is a biotechnology forerunner with local companies and laboratories constantly producing highly-developed research and innovative discoveries in fields like genetics and genetic engineering. The new co-operation will also shift Genoscoper’s operational focus towards specialist services and further reinforce the company’s strong emphasis on research and development, a view shared by Mars Incorporated. Genoscoper’s future research plans include developing DNA technologies for more personalized and predictive healthcare based on the pet’s comprehensive DNA profile.

"This new partnership between Mars Veterinary and Genoscoper will allow Mars Petcare globally to build upon Mars’s United States based leadership in canine DNA testing. We hope it will lead to global next-generation solutions for dogs, owners, veterinarians and breeders" says Neale Fretwell, General Manager of Mars Veterinary. "By combining our efforts, we will bring more advanced, accurate, and relevant DNA tests quicker across the globe, which ultimately means many more dogs and owners will have better relationships. We look forward to working with the team at Genoscoper going forward."

Genoscoper Laboratories is a Finland-based animal diagnostics laboratory established in 1995. Its MyDogDNA testing concept helps explore inherited characteristics in dogs using the world's first genome-wide DNA analysis. The technology uses a comprehensive panel analysis to test for known mutations, and simultaneously records thousands of neutral chromosomal markers that can be used to measure genetic diversity and even locate new mutations associated with other genetic disorders. DNA TECHNOLOGY ENABLES SHELTER DOGS TO GO FROM RESCUED TO RESCUER

Mars Veterinary to donate WISDOM PANEL® Breed Identification DNA Tests to Search Dog Foundation for the recruiting and training of shelter canines

Portland, OR  (June 23, 2014) – Disaster response organization, Search Dog Foundation (SDF) today announced that it will now use WISDOM PANEL® breed identification DNA tests on all incoming canine recruits to help identify suitable candidates for its training program. SDF is a California-based non-profit whose mission is to strengthen disaster response in America, by recruiting and training shelter/rescue dogs and partnering them with first responders for deployment to disaster sites around the country and the world.

SDF’s process of recruiting candidates from shelters across the country can be a life-saving and life-changing opportunity for some canines. Such was the case with Winnie, a recent graduate of the SDF program who was abandoned by her owner to a shelter in Wyoming because of excessive energy, drive, and tenacity. Yet it was these same traits that made her perfect for search and rescue.

"To be a part of advancing a life-saving cause such as search and rescue is something we’re very excited about," said Mars Veterinary General Manager Neale Fretwell, PhD. "Knowing dogs like Winnie, who may have otherwise perished in a shelter, can find purpose and reward in the work they were truly bred for is just the kind of practical application of DNA technology we hope for."

Recruiting and training a dog for search and rescue is time and resource intensive. Initially SDF relied on visual identification to find candidates for the program—looking for dogs that resembled breeds known to be successful in search and rescue work. However, visual identification, especially with mixed-breed dogs, is only accurate about 25 percent of the time. To improve these results, SDF partnered with Mars Veterinary, makers of the WISDOM PANEL® DNA tests to first analyze their population of successful program graduates and then build a database of ideal search and rescue breeds from that population. Mars Veterinary will now donate WISDOM PANEL® kits to SDF for testing and vetting all new candidates to the program.

"We’re grateful to Mars Veterinary for contributing this essential tool in the recruitment and profiling of these heroic dogs," said Debra Tosch, SDF Executive Director and former canine handler. "Beyond the initial assessment, if a particular behavior comes up in training, knowing the breed’s natural tendencies further helps our trainers understand that behavior."

As for Winnie, SDF expects great things for this Australian Shepherd and West Highland White Terrier mix who, upon graduation, was paired with handler Alex Van. Alex and Winnie have been assigned to the Orange County Fire Authority and will be an invaluable asset to the community and country at large. Winnie has come a long way from an uncertain future in a shelter to potential hero, but according to her DNA…she had it in her all along.

WISDOM PANEL® 2.0 kits are available to consumers at www.wisdompanel.com for $79.99 each. The test covers more than 200 breeds including all those recognized by the AKC and includes (2) "do-it-yourself" cheek swabs, instructions and pre-paid shipping for mailing the sample to the lab. After a simple three-step process—at-home swabbing, kit activation online, and mailing the kit back in—and within three weeks of receipt of the sample, dog owners are emailed an official Ancestry Report revealing their dog’s genetic background.

The WISDOM PANEL® 2.0 test can give owners:

  • Breed ancestry identification back to great-grandparents for mixed breed dogs
  • Breed comparison of suspected purebred dog to the profile of known purebred dogs in the WISDOM PANEL® database
  • Illustration that a dog is a true 50/50 hybrid of two purebred parents for designer dogs
  • Adult weight range prediction to help make appropriate nutrition and diet choices
  • Breed insights to help provide a better training program, understand behavior, and create an effective care and wellness plan

WISDOM PANEL® "SWAB-A-THON" TOUR TO HELP SHELTER DOGS FIND FOREVER HOMES USING THEIR DNA

New Mars Veterinary DNA test helps shelters better match dogs with homes

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 27, 2014 -- For the estimated four million dogs that enter shelters in the U.S. each year, an innovative DNA test and coast-to-coast tour are shining new hope in finding them matches to permanent homes. Wisdom Panel, a brand of Mars Veterinary, the industry leader in canine genetic testing, has introduced DOGTRAX™ DNA tests, a new test designed for animal shelters that provides important information about a dog's breed history that could help shelters and potential adopters find compatible matches. The company will take the test on the road over the next nine months to swab the DNA of shelter dogs in a bid to find them forever homes.

According to a nationwide survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Wisdom Panel, in September 2013, among 2,000 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, almost 9 out of 10 U.S. adults (86 percent) consider the breed characteristics of a dog at least somewhat important if they were selecting to adopt at a shelter. However, the majority of shelters lack reliable breed background information for their dogs, so physical traits -- such as how big a puppy might grow to; whether or not he sheds; or how much exercise or space he needs -- largely come down to guesswork.

In addition, without the knowledge of a dog's breed ancestry, behavioral traits such as sociability with other animals, herding, digging or barking, can be left unexplained. In fact, according to a 2012 survey from Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, dog experts were incorrect in identifying at least one breed detected by DNA analysis in visual assessments of dogs more than two-thirds of the time. WISDOM PANEL® DOGTRAX™ DNA tests can provide valuable genetic insights to help shelters find compatible homes for dogs more quickly and may also help reduce the chances of them being returned.

"Mars Veterinary is excited to introduce a revolutionary tool designed to give shelters and adopters valuable breed insights that can help them take the guesswork out of compatibility," said Neale Fretwell, Ph.D., General Manager of Wisdom Panel. "We're confident that DOGTRAX™< DNA tests will become a valuable resource for shelters while helping adopters make more informed decisions about taking home and caring for their beloved new friends."

Cross-Country WISDOM PANEL® "SWAB-A-THON" TOUR
Over the next nine months, the WISDOM PANEL® "SWAB-A-THON" TOUR, hosted by celebrity pet expert and dog trainer Harrison Forbes, will partner with shelters in up to 24 major cities to swab the DNA of a number of their dogs. Tested dogs and their breed ancestry reports will be showcased at consumer pet events in each market with a goal of matching them to permanent, compatible homes and broadening awareness of this valuable new tool.

In addition, the WISDOM PANEL® "SWAB-A-THON" TOUR will aim to educate existing dog owners how an understanding of their dog's genetics can help them be better pet parents. Armed with breed knowledge, owners can better understand behavior questions, strengthen their relationship with their dog and take better care of his health. Visitors who bring their dogs to the Wisdom Panel booth at "Swab-a-thon" events can get them swabbed on-site for a special price of $30, or take home a do-it-yourself kit for $50 (MSRP: $80). Within three weeks of receipt of the cheek swab test, dog owners will be emailed an official Ancestry Report revealing their dog's genetic background. For every ten dogs swabbed at "Swab-a-thon" events, Wisdom Panel will donate one DOGTRAX™ DNA individual test kit to a local dog shelter to help them find a dog a forever home.

"Whether it's a shelter dog or a dog that's already found a loving home, an understanding of his natural tendencies makes it possible to create a tailored training, exercise and nutrition program to fit his one-of-a-kind needs," said Harrison Forbes.

The Wisdom Panel Legacy
Mars Veterinary launched its first veterinarian administered, blood-based WISDOM PANEL® MX test in 2007. The state-of-the-art WISDOM PANEL® Professional vet test, DOGTRAX™ DNA tests and WISDOM PANEL® 2.0 tests are based on more than 15 years of extensive research, drawing from the expertise of leading scientists, veterinarians, universities and breed organizations throughout the world. Its original development included the analysis of more than 19 million DNA markers from more than 15,000 dogs across the United States and Great Britain. As a result, the tests are the most complete and comprehensive products on the market and are able to detect the breed composition of a dog with unprecedented accuracy using Mars, Incorporated proprietary processing.

Results of Nation's First Ever Mutt Census Reveal Paw Print of Nation's Mixed Breed Population

While the results of the U.S. Census continue to roll out, the findings of a more pet-friendly version - the National Mutt Census - are released today. Launched in March 2010, the Mutt Census - conducted by Mars Veterinary, the leading authority in dog DNA analysis - took a paw print of America’s mixed breed population and aimed to help strengthen the pet-owner bond. Mixed breed dogs account for more than half (53 percent) of all pet dogs in the U.S. and until now, their breed makeup has been largely guesswork. The results are now in and the German Shepherd is officially the most common breed identified in America’s mutts.

Wisdom Panel™ Insights - Fact Sheet

About half of the dog population in America is mixed breed, leaving many owners guessing the dog’s breed makeup and leaving important breed-specific information such as health, appearance and behavioral characteristics to speculation. While it is generally possible to deduce at least one breed based on appearance, most dogs are a mix of three or more breeds and the other breed characteristics often are not obvious. To help provide mixed breed dog owners with this important information, Mars Veterinary™ launched Wisdom Panel™ Insights; a DNA-based mixed breed analysis test for dogs.
