Did You Know?

The Cirneco dell ‘Etna hails from the island of Sicily. These affectionate and gentle dogs have lived there for over 2,000 years, in fact. One of the smallest of similar hounds found on Mediterranean islands, they started off as hunting dogs, used to chase rabbits and birds.

The breed was standardized by the Italian Kennel Club in 1939 and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2015. They are pretty resilient, having been bred to cope with rough ground, including volcanic terrain. Some say they are such good hunters that they can work without food or water for hours at a time. Not that we’d ever want to put that to the test. Or starve them of a minute’s affection.
