The Lapponian herder is one of three Lapphund breeds. Also known as the Lapinporokoira the breed originated in Finland, where they have been used for centuries by the Sami for herding reindeer. The Herder was officially separated into its own group in 1966.
This breed is large-sized and features a double coat—fairly long, straight and harsh outer coat and an undercoat of black, grey, or brownish colour. Overall they are usually black, grey, or dark brown with lighter shading. The Herder tail is medium in length, set low and has extremely thick fur. While standing still, the tail hangs down but while moving, it is carried in a loose curl.
