Did You Know?
These energetic and very excitable dogs are from the Canary Islands. They’re very popular on Gran Canaria and Tenerife but you’ll rarely find them anywhere else.
They’re technically a sighthound breed and are similar to other Mediterranean breeds, like the Pharaoh Hound and Ibizan Hound. Some say they were brought to the island by Phoenician traders in Roman times, but there’s no way to be 100% certain.
Over the years, they’ve evolved to hunt on rocky volcanic terrain and have unusually shaped feet to better handle this. They’re very skilled at detecting rabbits, and they have a short and repetitive bark when they do, known as their ‘rabbit song’. Skilled, intelligent and very hard-working, it’s hard not to sing their praises.
