Did You Know?

This rare toy dog is also known as the Russian Bolonka. During the early 18th century, Louis XIV of France gave Bolonki as gifts to the Russian nobility.

The breed we know today was first developed in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, using companion dogs like the Bichon Frise, Toy Poodle, Pekingese and French Bolognese. The idea was to create a pet with the right temperament for apartment living.

Today, these friendly, even-tempered dogs come in a variety of colours, but they didn’t at first. It’s said they were initially bred to be black so as to hide the dirt and cope with the scarcity of shampoo. Now that shampoo is a lot more common, we’re hoping that some day these lovely little dogs will be too.
